Today was our last day in beautiful Florence. We had a day full of art and shopping. Florence is brimming with both. We started the day with the Academia where we saw Michelangelo’s David. This statue is breathtaking in person. It is considered the symbol of the Renaissance.
I loved hearing about the details pointed out by our Rick Steves audio tour. David is fourteen feet tall. The story is that Michelangelo made David’s right hand abnormally large on purpose to represent that David was an ordinary man being powered by the hand of God.
After the Academia, we went to the Ufizzi Gallery where we saw works by Raphael, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio, Giotto and more.
After a whole morning of art galleries, we stopped for a little snack. Espresso, of course, and a giant croissant filled with nutella.
We saw the Duomo again, though we didn’t climb to the top of this one like we did in Rome.
We filled the rest of the afternoon with more shopping. Not necessarily buying , but wandering around all the markets and shops of Florence. We wandered into beautiful churches and also saw the Medici palace.
We stopped into a random little restaurant for a late lunch. The owner’s name was Andrea. He had the most incredible array of food. It was hard to decide what to eat. I had a potato fritatta and of course, delicious focaccia bread with olive oil.
We headed back to our apartment for a little bit of rest, which meant sitting on the rooftop patio again. There are just no words or pictures to describe how beautiful the view was from that patio.
We went to dinner at a local family owned placed called Sabatino’s, where we had pasta fajoli, a beautiful salad, bread and fried chicken Italian style.
I can’t say enough how great our airbnb experiences have been. Miria and Adriano’s place was perfect for us and they were such incredible, hospitable hosts.
Ciao, Firenze! I hope to see you again.
