These asian meatballs in flavorful sauce are a real crowd pleaser. They are great over rice or by themselves as an appetizer.
Asian food is a favorite at my house. We have it at least once a week, sometimes more. I love these meatballs because they are baked – none of the mess of frying. The panko breadcrumbs give them a great texture and the sauce is packed so full of flavor. I usually serve them over some jasmine or basmati rice.
You can make these meatballs with ground pork or ground beef. I often use a pound of each and mix them because that enhances the flavor, in my opinion. For the ginger, you can use dried ground ginger or you can use the ginger that comes in a tube. You can find it in the produce section of the grocery store. I use it a lot because it has a fresher flavor.
Here’s what you need:
- 2 lbs ground pork or beef (I usually use a pound of each)
- 3 t minced garlic
- 2 t sesame oil
- 1 c panko breadcrumbs
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 t ground ginger
- 1/2 c thinly sliced green onions (scallions)
For the sauce:
- 2/3 c hoisin sauce
- 1/4 c rice wine vinegar
- 2 T soy sauce
- 1 t sesame oil
- 1 t ginger
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
Preheat oven to 400.
Mix all the meatball ingredients together in a large bowl. I use my hands for this – it’s okay – get in there. Shape into 1 inch balls and place on a large greased baking sheet. Or you could bake them in a 9×13 dish.
Bake for about 12 minutes or until no longer pink inside. I usually cut one in half after 12 minutes just to make sure. If they are still pink, I put them back in the oven for another 2 minutes.
While the meatballs are baking, make the sauce. Simply whisk all the ingredients for the sauce together in a small bowl.
When the meatballs come out of the oven, place them in a serving bowl and pour the sauce over them. Stir them gently to completely coat each meatball in the delicious sauce.
If you are serving over rice, spoon some meatballs over the rice, making sure to get a little extra sauce in each bowl. Garnish with more thinly sliced green onions and sesame seeds if desired.
If serving as an appetizer, just put some toothpicks nearby. They are a great party appetizer!
