Homemade Cheeseburger Macaroni Hamburger Helper is a much improved version of the box kind and it’s not hard to make!
Who didn’t love hamburger helper as a kid? I sure did. I’ve been experimenting with a homemade version of this one for awhile and I’m pretty pleased with the results. It really does have that nostalgic flavor, but way better!
Here’s what you need to make it:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 onion, diced
- 2 T butter
- 12 oz elbow or rotini pasta
- 1 3/4 t salt
- 1 t onion powder
- 1/2 t oregano
- 1 t garlic powder
- 1/2 t black pepper
- 1/2 t mustard powder
- 1/2 t celery salt
- 5 T all purpose flour
- 2 c beef broth
- 2 c milk
- 1 t Worcestershire sauce
- 2 c shredded cheddar cheese
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Cook pasta according to instructions. Drain and set aside.
Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and saute until soft.
Add the ground beef and cook until no longer pink, breaking it up into small pieces. Drain excess grease.
Stir in the salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, oregano, mustard and celery salt and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
Stir in the flour and cook and stir for 1-2 minutes until everything is thoroughly combined.
Add the beef broth and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes or until it has thickened a bit.
Stir in the milk and let simmer for 5-6 minutes, stirring frequently.
Remove from the heat and add in the Worcestershire sauce and cheese and stir until the cheese is melted.
Finally, fold in the cooked macaroni and serve! Garnish with fresh parsley or green onions if desired.
