Mama Palma’s Decadent Fudge Pie

Mama Palma’s decadent fudge pie is a classic southern dessert that you need to have in your repertoire.

When I was growing up, my stepmother made this simple, delicious pie all the time.   It is comfort food for me, and has become the same for a lot of family and friends.

When I think about southern desserts, I think about chess pie, banana pudding, pecan pie and this incredible fudge pie. It’s a wonderful combination of pie and a brownie. It’s something that I’ve been making for years, but never get tired of eating. I’m telling you, a slice of this warm with some whipped cream or ice cream on top is comfort food at its finest.

You can make your own pie crust for this if that’s your thing, but a frozen traditional pie crust (not deep dish) works too. In fact, most of the time, that’s what I use for this particular pie.

You’ll need:

1 frozen pie crust (traditional, not deep dish)

1/4 c. cocoa

1/4 c. self-rising flour

1 stick butter

2 eggs

1 c. sugar

1 t. vanilla

Preheat oven to 350. Put the butter in a small saucepan and melt it on medium heat.

When the butter is almost melted, add the cocoa and stir.

When the butter is completely melted, take it off the heat and stir in the vanilla.

In the meantime, mix the eggs, flour and sugar in a mixing bowl.  Slowly add the butter mixture, while stirring. In fact, add just a small amount and mix it well to cool it down a bit to avoid scrambling the eggs.

When it is thoroughly mixed, pour into the pie crust and bake for 35 minutes. It may look just a little jiggly when you take it out, but it settles nicely as it cools.

I love to serve this warm with vanilla ice cream on top, but it’s great all by itself!
